The CBC documentary *”Angry Kids/ Stressed Out Parents”* featured Triple P, an evidence based and proven program effective in helping parents develop effective parenting skills. Research has shown that the earlier we intervene and give parents the skills and confidence needed to effectively raise children results in healthier children. Triple P promotes good communication and strong relationships between parents and children. It helps parents recognize the causes of common problems and shows them how they may deal with these problems in a constructive and caring way by encouraging desirable behaviour in their children.

Parents who attend the course will learn to:

  • Identify what positive parenting is

  • Promote positive child development

  • Identify the causes of child behaviour problems

  • Encourage positive behaviour

  • Determine what factors influence a child’s behaviour

  • Understand logical consequences

  • Set goals

  • Ask, Say, Do

Alternatively, Triple P helps parents recognize the causes of common child behaviour problems and encourage desirable behaviour in their children. The five key principles of positive parenting that are covered are:

Ensuring a safe, interesting environment where children can explore, experiment and develop their skills.

ating a positive learning environment by being available when children need help, care or attention.

Using assertive responses by being consistent and acting quickly when children misbehave.

Having realistic expectations for children and for yourself
as a parent.

Taking care of yourself as a parent and ensuring personal needs are met.

Triple P offers suggestions and ideas to help parents:

  • Build positive relationships with their children

  • Praise and encourage behaviour they like

  • Teach children new skills

  • Set rules and give instructions that children are likely to follow

  • Respond to misbehaviour immediately, consistently, and decisively

  • Use discipline strategies that work

  • Take care of themselves as parents

A variety of programs are available depending on parents’ and children’s needs. There are also parenting videos, tip-sheets, workbooks, and other helpful materials. there is no one right way to be a parent. Triple P offers information, support and practical answers to everyday parenting concerns. Seven 2 1/2 hour sessions (day or evening) workbook (supplied).
